October 12, 2011

November will be an busy month for the SMART-IV project since two major events are organized.

First of all, early November a sawah system development training will be organized in Kumasi, Ghana. Five technicians from Benin and five from Togo will be educated in the principles and techniques of sawah system development. The training will be provided by AfricaRice and trainers from the Crops Research Institute in Ghana. CSIR has a long experience in sawah system development through various projects funded by Japanese donors. After finishing the training, the technicians will return to their areas to establish demonstration sites and work with farmers groups on the development of inland valleys.

Secondly, AfricaRice is co-organizer of a workshop on sawah system development, together with CSIR, Kinki University and JIRCAS. Scientist and development specialists from Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Ghana will gather in Kumasi from November 22-24. SMART-IV project members and partners will join this meeting. It is expected that the quality of the SMART-IV project will improve through the interaction with experienced sawah development specialists and through learning from the results of other projects where swah systems are introduced.
