April 24, 2012

On Tuesday April 24, we received the sad news that our respected and close colleague Dr. Youssouf Dembélé passed away after a period of illness.

Since June 2011 Youssouf was employed by the Africa Rice Center as Coordinator of the Inland Valley Consortium (IVC). At AfricaRice he was involved in several projects related to inland valley research, including the RAP-IV, GCI-Rice and the SMART-IV projects. Being part of  the SMART-IV project team, Youssouf was responsible for the development activities in Togo and Benin and he worked closely together with ITRA and CBF on site characterization and selection, and on developing work plans for sustainable sawah system development.

Youssouf had a long experience in agricultural research in inland valleys in Africa. Before joining AfricaRice, he was employed by INERA, the national agricultural research institute of Burkina Faso. In this position he was several years the national coordinator of IVC and he led the national rice research program. During his career he worked with for example the Food and Agriculture Organization and the International Water Management Institute. He recently published on this work in the journal Irrigation and Drainage.

Youssouf will be greatly missed and remembered as a loyal colleague. Our immediate thoughts and prayers are with his wife, his children, family and friends, and we offer them our condolences.
